Kyoto (by Maggie)

On Monday we went to a castle called Nijo-Jo. The castle was built for the shogun and took 25 years to complete. It was led by a shogun until the late 1800s. One thing that I found interesting was the rooms. They all looked exactly the same because if an enemy came in they would not know where they were. There was also a moat around the whole thing and a wall to help keep the enemies out. There were secret rooms everywhere that had guards to protect the shogun. I might think you are wondering who the shogun is so that's why I will tell you. The shogun was like a king in Japan. A shogun ruled Japan from about 1625 to the mid 1800s.

  1. Hi Maggie,
That sounds really interesting, although I wonder if the shogun ever got bored with having all of his rooms look the same. I hope you are having a great time on your trip. Say hi to your parents and brothers for me. -Anita (Max's mom :-))

  2. Maggie, I am glad you had a chance to visit Nijo-jo. That is my favorite castle in Japan. I especially like the nightingale floors and the massive doors on the front gate.

  3. Ohayo, Maggie - you and your brothers might enjoy reading Across the Nightingale Floor. I first read it in 6th grade, but Ilan read it this summer. It is about a boy named Takeo who is training to be an assassin and has to get across the nightingale floors without making a sound, which is supposedly impossible. Glad you're having fun in Japan. -Kathy
